Our Corporate Responsibility

How we manage Corporate Responsibility

The Chief Executive has ultimate responsibility for corporate responsibility issues. Key performance measures are regularly reviewed by the Board.

At Group level, we have a number of key policies in place, which set out our standards in areas such as the environment, energy and health and safety.

We have always encouraged a local approach to the management of our business, and this includes corporate responsibility. Our local management teams are free to make decisions based on the needs of their communities, whilst following the core policies of the Group. This devolved approach allows our operating companies to respond to the issues that matter most to their business, employees and local communities.

Measuring our performance

Ongoing measurement of our environmental and social performance is essential if we are to continue to improve. We have established a set of key performance indicators which relate to the issues and responsibilities that we have identified as most important for our business.

We also use an independent specialist consultancy to provide external assurance on the information within our environmental and social reports, and we set ourselves goals and demanding targets to ensure that we keep improving our performance.

Benchmarking our performance against other leading companies helps us to understand where we are doing well and where we can improve. We are proud of our record in the Business in the Community (BITC) Corporate Responsibility Index. We received a Gold rating again this year and came top of the public transport companies that participated, for the fifth consecutive year. We have been included within the FTSE4Good indices since their inception.
